Master of Arts in Social Science

Campbellsville University's College of Arts and Sciences now offers the Master of Arts in Social Science. This degree is a generalist, non-thesis program designed to give graduate students a broad content area to further educational and career opportunites. The program, which may be used to enhance teacher certification, includes:

  • History
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Social Studies
  • Sociology

Course Requirements

The degree is a 36-hour program with three options:

  • Option 1 - Students choose two of the four social science disciplines of history, political science, psychology and sociology, and complete 18 hours in each of their chosen areas.
  • Option 2 - Students complete 18 semester hours in one of the four social science disciplines of history, political science, psychology and sociology, and nine semester hours each in two additional disciplines of their choice.

Option 1 - Two Major Areas

(Ex. History/Political Science)

  • History - 18 Credit Hours
    • Historiography & Research 3 hrs
    • Electives 15 hrs
  • Political Science - 18 Credit Hours
    • Seminar in American Politics 3 hrs
    • Electives 15 hrs

TOTAL = 36 Hours

Option 2 - One Major Area and Two Minor Areas

(Ex. Psychology Emphasis)

  • Psychology - 18 Credit Hours
    • Advanced General Psychology I & II 6 hrs
    • Electives 12 hrs
  • Sociology Minor - 9 Credit Hours
    • Advanced General Sociology 3 hrs
    • Contemporary Sociological Theory 3 hrs
    • Elective 3 hrs
  • Political Science Minor - 9 Credit Hours
    • Seminar in American Politics 3 hrs
    • Electives 6 hrs

TOTAL = 36 Hours

Rank II Teacher Certification

Students may earn Rank II certification with specialties in content knowledge to improve secondary classroom teaching in social sciences. The degree must be completed within five years

  • Political Science - 6 Credit Hours
    • Seminar in American Politics 3 hrs

    • Supervision of Instruction 3 hrs

Admission to the Program

    1. Admission to Graduate Studies
    2. Accredited baccalaureate degree
    3. Completed university application form, including a sample of written work
    4. Official transcripts of grades, graduate and undergraduate, with a 2.9 GPA or higher
    5. If seeking Rank II teacher certification, a valid teaching certificate
    6. GRE score of 1000, or approprate NTE or LSAT examination scores
    7. Two letters of recommendation from undergraduate institution

Up to 12 hours of graduate credit may be applied toward your Campbellsville University degree.
