Honors Program

Why does Campbellsville University have an Honors Program?

Campbellsville University recognizes that each student must be given the opportunity to reach his or her full intellectual potential. Part of this mission includes reaching out to our most talented students with the University’s Honors Program to provide them a more challenging general education experience within the liberal arts curriculum. Each student who completes the program’s requirements will be recognized as an Honors Graduate at commencement ceremonies and will receive an Honors Diploma.

Who may participate in the Honors Program?

The Honors Program is open admission to all students who may benefit from the Honors Program. Any student who wishes may enroll in any Honors course, but only those students who complete all the requirements described herein may graduate with an Honors diploma. This philosophy means that students may tailor their educational experiences to meet their talents and interests by taking Honors courses, even if they don’t choose to pursue the Honors diploma.

What is the Honors Seminar course all about?

This course will be designed to enhance students’ intellectual growth outside the traditional classroom by actively involving them in discussions (led by students, faculty, or guest lecturers) that develop and apply critical thinking skills to a wide variety of topics. This course would meet once a week for 2 hours, and discussion may even be opened to the University community and the public (at the discretion of the instructor) if the discussion or presentation is likely to be of broad interest. A prerequisite for entering the Honors Seminar course is the completion of twelve hours of other Honors course work.

How are Honors courses different from regular courses?

An Honors course would not be a separate class: it would meet at the same time and hear the same lectures, but a different syllabus will apply to those enrolled in the Honors section that provides the honors students with a more rigorous, enlightening, and challenging experience. Honors students will generally be expected to develop critical thinking skills and excellent written and verbal communication abilities. They will generally engage in different, more thought-provoking assignments than the regular class section. This means that Honors students will be doing different work, not just more work.

Honors Program Requirements

Each student who wishes to graduate with an Honors Diploma must:

  1. Complete at least half (26 hours minimum) of the General Educational Requirements (52 hours) as Honors courses.
  2. Maintain at least a 3.0 overall gradepoint average and have no more than one “C” in any general education course and no grade below a “C” on transcript in any course.
  3. Must successfully complete a 1 hour “Honors Seminar” course during each of any three semesters the student is attending Campbellsville University (for a total of 3 hours credit).
