M.A. Teaching 5-9 Overview
The online master’s of teaching middle grades from Campbellsville University was designed for those who wish to transition into a teaching career and already have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. The program provides you with the skills needed to work with diverse learners, apply effective teaching methods and understand relevant topics in student growth and development. You will receive the certification required to teach your chosen subject while learning the modern trends that are evolving education.
The program teaches the cognitive, physical and social-emotional growth of children and adolescents; a variety of instructional approaches, materials and comprehensive curriculum to support student learning in literacy; and the practical skills in student assessment required for curriculum planning in the classroom. The online M.A.T. degree also covers the research methods and procedures used in education, effective management skills and the needs and nature of diverse populations.
You can choose from one of four tracks to help you focus your degree:
- English
- Science
- Social Studies
- Mathematics
A graduate practicum/seminar is required for the degree. The course gives you an opportunity to apply your best instructional practice in a field-based setting with cognitive coaching from colleagues. Students in the traditional track must complete 16 weeks of teaching.
The program’s faculty incorporate their real-world experiences in the curriculum. Campbellsville University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Campbellsville’s education programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and are approved by the Education Professional Standards Board of Kentucky (EPSB) for teacher education and certification. The fully online degree offers the flexibility and convenience of being able to complete coursework when it best fits your busy personal and professional schedules.
Course Map
The online master’s of teaching middle grades consists of 30 hours for Option 6 students and 36 hours for Traditional students. Sixteen weeks of student teaching are required for traditional students, and Option 6 students will complete fieldwork within their own classroom under the supervision of an assigned mentor. There are four tracks to choose from: English, mathematics, science and social studies.

* For students who are not currently employed as a teacher of record in an appropriate level classroom, or for Option 6 candidates who do not student teach.
Students are required to complete 20 field hours in the following course:
- ENG 565: Teaching English in the Middle and High Schools
Students are required to complete 20 field hours in the following course:
- MTH 550: Methods and Materials of Teaching Mathematics
Students are required to complete 20-40 field hours in the following course:
- BIO 550: Methods of Science Teaching
Students are required to complete 20-40 field hours in the following course:
- SSE 554: Teaching Social Studies in Middle and Secondary Schools
Admissions Requirements
In order to apply to Campbellsville University’s accredited online master’s of teaching in secondary education, prospective students must submit or complete the following:
- Complete the online application
- Official Transcript Request Form (via Adobe Sign). In most cases, this will allow us to request your transcripts on your behalf.
- All official college transcripts from each college or university previously attended and currently attended
- 2.75 overall GPA from their undergraduate studies or a 3.0 in their last 30 hours
- Must have at least a bachelor’s degree in the field in which the applicant wishes to teach
*Some additional requirements will be requested upon acceptance into the program.
Costs & Financial Aid
The online master’s in teaching (5-9) costs $319 per credit hour. In order to help students afford their education, Campbellsville University’s staff is available to work with students to discover available financial aid options.
Students can fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to find out what scholarships, grants, loans and payment plans are available for them. There are numerous options available, and not all financial aid is based on need.
A maximum of 12 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university can be transferred into this program.
