What is an "endowment" and how can it support Campbellsville University?

An endowment is an investment of money or other assets received for a purpose where the donor, grantor or source has specified that the principal shall be preserved, utilizing only the interest and earnings for a stated purpose.

Endowed funds assure Campbellsville University's future as a Christian university of choice. Such funding enables the University to attract cutting-edge faculty who are committed to the intertwining of faith and discipline, as well as deserving students who seek to earn a degree at a comprehensive, private university.

The more recognition we at Campbellsville University receive for being one of the South's leading Christian universities, the greater we hold fast to the heritage and tradition that have brought us this far. And as that recognition increases, so will the demand for endowed funds. Thus, funding for endowed scholarships, professorships, and programs will assure the quality and excellence Campbellsville University needs and deserves to service current and future students and faculty.

Who manages these endowed funds?

Endowment funds at Campbellsville University are administered and invested under the guidelines of the University by the Board of Trustees.

These funds are professionally managed to generate a reasonable level of income to meet the current needs of the projects supported by the invested funds. At the same time, accounts for the endowment funds are invested, allowing the income and principal to grow over time. Growth of the University's endowment is essential to ensure that the project specified to receive endowment income can be maintained despite rising costs and the effects of inflation.

What types of programs can be endowed at Campbellsville University?

  1. Support of Students-Many of today's student scholars are confronted with financial hardships that impede their educational progress. Endowed scholarships and fellowships provide the means for deserving Campbellsville University students to devote themselves more fully to their studies. Minimum gift levels to establish named endowment funds for undergraduate scholarships begins at $50,000; for graduate scholarships, $50,000; and for a named endowed fund unrestricted to the University or for purposes not mentioned on this sheet, $10,000.   2. Support of Faculty-Endowed deanships, chairs, and professorships at Campbellsville University are gifts that permit the University to acknowledge exceptional teaching and research achievement in a public way. The earnings from endowed chair funds make it possible to attract exceptional professors at the pinnacle of their careers. They also provide funds to encourage new faculty members to renew and regenerate academic programs for the University. Minimum gift levels to establish named endowment funds for faculty begin at $250,000.
  3. Support of Seminars and Lectureships-It is vital for private institutions such as Campbellsville University to attract leading national and global speakers to the campus each year for seminars and lectureships. Such speakers enrich the heritage and tradition of excellence at Campbellsville University. Endowed seminars and lectureships are gifts that will enable the University to attract such noteworthy persons of distinction to the campus. Minimum gift levels to establish named endowment funds for seminars and lectureships begin at $100,000.
  4. Support of Professional Development-Faculty and staff at Campbellsville University must constantly improve themselves through professional development. Such training enables an already superb faculty and staff to become even better. Endowment funds for professional development will allow faculty and/or staff to attend various professional development and training conferences. Minimum gift levels to establish endowment funds for professional development for faculty and staff begin at $75,000.
  5. Support of Center or Institute Directorships-A university of distinction is many times known for programs that are unique to itself, such as is the case with Campbellsville University. Currently, Campbellsville University hosts five institutes and centers-The Center for Educational Enhancement, Clay Hill Memorial Forest, The American Civil War Institute, The Center for Bivocational Christian Ministry, and The Kentucky Heartland Outreach Ministry Program. In order to maintain excellence in these programs, endowment funds are critically needed to allow the University to attract outstanding scholars who can direct these programs. Minimum gift levels to establish endowment funds for the directorships of the University's various centers and institutes begin at $100,000.
  6. Support of a College or School-Great Christian universities not only require excellent faculty, they require total excellence of the academic program-from faculty to students to facilities to equipment. In order to achieve this noteworthy excellence, minimum gift levels to endow and name a college or school at Campbellsville University is $1 million; to name an academic division or department is $500,000.
  7. Support of a Performing Arts Series-The performing arts at Campbellsville University have gained national reputation. Music and drama performances at Campbellsville University provide a wonderful opportunity for the citizenry of Central Kentucky as well as the University community to enjoy the finest in presentation. A minimum gift level of $100,000 has been established to endow and name a performing arts series.
  8. Support of Athletics-Athletics at Campbellsville University are important in the life of the institution as it attracts students, supporters, and media attention. Campbellsville University believes in producing solid scholar athletes who excel on and off the field or court. A minimum gift level of $10,000 has been established to assist in athletic scholarships and $100,000 for athletic tournaments. Other projects may be endowed for other amounts. These projects and amounts should be discussed with the President, the Vice President for Advancement, the Director of Athletics, and/or the Director of Development and Alumni Relations.

Upon your first appointment with the Office of Advancement, you will be asked by a professional advancement staff person to share with them your desire for the endowed gift. Guidelines will then be written and prepared by the Office for your review.

University-Wide Minimum Endowment Levels

In order to meet the terms of endowed funds, the following minimum amounts are required to establish an endowment at Campbellsville University:

$1,000,000 Deanship/Chair (Support for a new full academic dean or chair)

$1,000,000 College/School (Support for a college or school of the University)

$750,000 Deanship/Chair (Endowed chair to support an existing academic dean
or chair)

$750,000 Academic Division/Department (Support for an academic division or department of the University)

$250,000 Professorship (Establishes a full-time faculty position to enable the pursuit of Christian education excellence)

$100,000 Center/Institute Directorship (Establishes a full-time faculty position whose primary task is to direct special centers and institutes connected with Campbellsville University)

$100,000 Lectureship or Seminar Series (To establish an endowment for visiting professors or speakers that provides continuous support for such a series)

$100,000 Performing Arts Series (To establish an endowment for a performing arts series in music or drama)

$100,000 Graduate Student Fellowship (Endowment for a full fellowship covering all educational expenses)

$75,000 Staff Development Funds (In support of staff developing their careers through study, research, travel, publishing, and professional activities)

$50,000 Undergraduate Scholarship (Endowment for a full scholarship covering all educational expenses)

$50,000 Faculty Development Funds (In support of faculty developing their careers through study, research, travel, publishing, and professional activities)

$50,000 Teaching Support Funds (Endowment developing new courses, new course materials or experimentation with new teaching approaches)

$10,000 Student Recognition Grant (Endowment income provides an annual grant to a student. Donor designates the field and criteria)

$10,000 Named Endowed Fund (Unrestricted gift to Campbellsville University or for the purposes not mentioned above)
