What is “capital” and how can it support Campbellsville University?

“Capital,” simply defined, may be described as those funds that are applied toward “brick and mortar” projects-or in other words-projects that impact an institution's grounds and facilities.

The positive influence stately campus facilities and well-groomed grounds can have on an institution is vital. Many marketing and physical plant experts contend that as much as 70% of a university's image is based on how its facilities and grounds present themselves to campus guests.

Obviously, Campbellsville University wishes to stand alongside the finest small Southern university campuses in terms of her facilities and grounds, not to mention the academic and athletic programs. But in order to do so, capital funding must be raised in order to meet this current and future challenge.

Although Campbellsville University has made significant improvements with its facilities as well as with its grounds during the past decade, the University must go to that “next level” of facility and grounds excellence.

As enrollments continue to grow on this Central Kentucky campus, so do the demands on current facilities. And along with those rising enrollments, a desire for future facilities must be realized as well.

One of the South's leading Christian universities.

The more recognition we at Campbellsville University receive for being one of the South's leading Christian universities, the greater we hold fast to the heritage and tradition that have brought us this far.

We adhere proudly to our Christian values and our affiliation with the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Ours is a community where students enjoy their independence, but also benefit from the togetherness, love, and support of a close-knit family.

Our policy has always been, and will always be, to put the students first in everything we do. We want our students to benefit from contemporary facilities. The latest of these include our new townhouse-style residence village, enhanced dining facility and courtyard, new chemistry and biology wing, modern computer labs, and the newly renovated fine arts center.

We seek to make Campbellsville University the Christian university of choice. Your prayerful and financial support of the University's capital projects can make an indelible mark on the life of this private, comprehensive university.

What types of capital projects can be funded at Campbellsville University?

Campbellsville University has a host of capital projects (existing and future) that seek major donor support. While the decision to name a structure or designated area is subject to many considerations, the following guidelines are recommended for gifts to Campbellsville University.

A. Naming Opportunities

*Naming of major facilities requires approval from the Campbellsville University Board of Trustees.

B. Gift Levels for Naming

Existing facilities-(consideration will be made on a case-by-case basis; total cost of remodeling or 1/3 the cost of replacement, whichever is greater) Naming opportunities for a donor or a donor's designee are available through a substantial contribution equaling 1/3 or more of the replacement cost. Usually these funds are endowed to allow Campbellsville University to meet important future needs. Also, it is expected that a gift resulting in a named building will have a relationship to the academic unit(s) within the building. Ordinarily, only present value of deferred gift commitments will be counted toward the 1/3 minimum.

New facilities-(totally privately funded; a minimum of 50% of costs or concurrence of other major donors funding the project required) If a facility is to be wholly funded from private sources, 50% will come from the donor who is receiving the naming opportunity or there must be concurrence of other major donors. Certain expectations can be made, depending on the fundraising plan for a specific capital project. As with existing facilities, it is expected that gifts resulting in a named building will have a relationship to the academic unit(s) within that building. Ordinarily, deferred gift commitments will not be counted toward the 50% minimum, unless the full funding is available for construction.

Naming sub-units (rooms and laboratories)-(consideration on a case-by-case basis using square footage or other formulas) The required gift level for labs and other rooms can be worked out by square footage or other formulas. There are no fixed amounts in perpetuity. Prices, as originally determined, will be pegged to an index. Minimum gift levels will also take into consideration the visibility of the facility, the nature of activity housed in the named area, and other relevant factors.

Outdoor features (total direct costs)-Numerous opportunities exist to name places and landmarks in memory of family or friends or in honor of donors who make substantial contributions toward landscape improvements that would enhance the beauty and utility of the Campbellsville University campus. However, this may require additional approval by the Administrative Staff and/or Physical Plant.

Equipment, furnishings and land-(consideration on a case-by-case basis, but preferably 50% of the cost and above) Outright gifts of major equipment items, collections, or furnishings may carry the name of the donors provided adequate funds are available for space and operational needs. An outright gift of land that is accepted by the University and held for research, extension or instruction purposes may be named in honor of the donor.
