Beauford Sanders arrived in Campbellsville Kentucky, July 1990, and now, starting in his 17th season, he still holds the reins of Tiger Baseball.
“Wow, that’s a long time to be in one place in this type of job. I really enjoy Campbellsville and it has been a great ride. My three children have grown up here and I cherish the many positive memories experienced through baseball while here," said Sanders.
The veteran coach has accumulated 600+ wins during his career, which began in the junior college ranks. In 1996 the Tigers were one victory away from advancing to the NAIA World Series. The Tigers have demonstrated their competitiveness by recording five conference or tournament championships and advancing to NAIA regional play eight times under Sanders guidance.
What makes Sanders beam with pride as much as any victory recorded is the graduation rate of 90% of players making senior status and the overall semester average G.P.A of 3.0. “The mark of 3.0 team cumulative is our goal every semester. Going the distance academically is more important than anything these guys accomplish on the diamond. Their economic and to an extent, social mobility depend in a great part, on their academic effort,.” he said.
“I am blessed to be able to do what I have a passion for. I am grateful for the administrative support, alumni, and for each of the roster members and their families who all contribute in many ways to assist our overall program. Having two outstanding assistants to work with, the recent facility upgrades with our locker area, weight room and indoor practice area, all give us the opportunity to remain competitive," added the veteran coach.
The "team" concept has always been important in Sanders’ philosophy. “Together we can achieve more and it is the only way to become champions," added Sanders.
Coach Sanders has been active in the Campbellsville community with youth baseball and he, along with his team members, are involved with various community service projects throughout the school year. He has been honored with two Hall of Fame inductions, Woodruff High school and North Greenville College. He remains active nationally within the NAIA at all levels and he served as NAIA – BCA president in 2000-2002 and is currently Mid South Conference Baseball Chairman.
Coach Sanders has three children, Andrea is currently enrolled at Campbellsville University majoring in education, Nathan is a graduating senior at Taylor County High School, and Neil will be a junior at Taylor County High School this fall. All three are athletes and enjoy the outdoors with their father who is an avid white tail deer hunter and enjoys fishing for any species of fish.
Sanders is an adjunct instructor at Campbellsville University and holds a BS from the University of South Carolina and MA from Furman University. He is teacher certified K-12.

Coach Hortness began coaching baseball in 1984 and has worked with players age five to thirty-five. “When a five year old forgets to bring his glove to the park, it can be funny. When a twenty-five year old forgets his glove, it is time for him to do something else," said an always smiling Hortness.
Before coming to Campbellsville University, Hortness was coaching at Dakota Wesleyan University and managing in the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Association. Coach Hortness has also coached at Northern State University and the University of South Dakota, as well as several years at the high school level
"A couple of summers ago I had a conversation with a nice gentleman who was visiting a friend. During the conversation the man told me how much he would enjoy being a college baseball coach; spending time outside, competition, having a short season that alows you to do other things with your time. Then he asked how much time I spend actually coaching during the season. After thinking a while my response was, "I'd guess we're actually with the players as a team somewhere around three hours when we practice and six to ten hours on days we do play." "What a great life," he said, "baseball on and off," reflected Hortness.
"This man designs houses for a living, works hard and gets compensated well for it. Knowing this I began telling him that baseball coaches are not just coaches. We are guidance counselors, admissions counselors, recruiters, financial aid advisors, financial planners, tour guides, resident advisors, horticulturists, groundskeepers, custodians, janitors, surveyors, engineers, mechanics, carpenters, inventors, bus drivers, psychologists, psychiatrists, weathermen, writers, and just about anything else you can think of. While doing all of those things, we still get to spend about 40 hours per week coaching baseball. So, yes, it is a pretty good life," added the Coach.
He looked at me and said, "I think I'll stick to designing houses." My reply was, "I can't design a house, but with a pair of pliers and piece of chain-link, I can probably fix one for you," laughed Hortness.
