The Department of Chemistry and Physical Science offers courses in chemistry, earth science, geology and physics to approximately 200 undergraduate students per semester.  Students in the department may complete a degree with a major in Chemistry, a minor in Chemistry or a minor in Physics. The department is active in the Kentucky Academy of Science, the American Chemical Society and the Kentucky Association of Physics Teachers.

A broad base of chemistry courses are offered, including studies in Health Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Undergraduate Research, Biochemistry, and many others.  Chemistry is an excellent major for students interested in pursuing careers in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, engineering and education.  An American Chemical Society based curriculum is offered for both a major or minor in Chemistry, each leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree or Bachelor of Arts Degree .

Students intending to pursue an advanced degree in chemistry or planning to pursue chemistry as a profession should pursue the BS degree.  Those seeking secondary education certification in chemistry as well as the pre-professional programs (pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, etc.) should pursue the BA degree.

The physics curriculum includes courses in astronomy, mechanics, statics, electronic circuits, modern physics and thermodynamics.  The Physics minor is a good option for students pursuing careers in chemistry, engineering and mathematics.

At present the Division of Natural Science offers geology courses in support of the Chemistry secondary education degree program. These courses include Physical Geology, Earth Science, Paleontology, and Field Studies in Geology.

The Natural Science Division recently developed a minor in Environmental Sciences.  Students selecting the minor may chose either an Applied Environmental Sciences emphasis or an Environmental Studies emphasis.  The Applied Environmental Sciences emphasis is intended for Biology and Chemistry majors.
