Academic Programs in Chemistry & Physics

The chemistry program allows students to choose a Chemistry major with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree or a  Chemistry major with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree.  Students wishing to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry or employment in the chemical industry should complete the B.S. degree tract.  The B.A. degree is designed for those seeking secondary teacher certification in chemistry as well as for several pre-professional majors (pre-dental, pre-medical, pre-pharmacy, etc.).  Students seeking careers in dentistry, medicine, optometry,  pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary science generally major in chemistry with a minor in biology or the converse.
If students wish to pursue a degree with 8-12 secondary teacher certification, they may complete either a B.S. degree with a chemistry major or a B.A. degree with a chemistry major.  Currently, the state of Kentucky does not offer teacher certification for minor programs.  In addition, the Natural Science Division offers a physics minor
The Division of Natural Science recently developed a minor in Environmental Sciences. Students selecting the minor may chose either an Applied Environmental Sciences emphasis or an Environmental Studies emphasis.  The Applied Environmental Sciences emphasis is intended for Biology and Chemistry majors.
