Course Syllabus



I. TITLE OF COURSE: BIO 110, Biology, 3 semester hours.

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION: An examination of basic biological principles and concepts including a survey of the five kingdoms. This course is a general education course and does not count toward a major or minor in Biology.

III. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. To provide students with an introduction to core concepts of the science of biology and with an overview of the diversity of life sufficient to allow them to continue study or to apply their knowledge to a chosen vocation. Knowledge gained in this course should be directly applicable to teaching of elementary school science.

2. To provide students with a knowledge of biological concepts sufficient to allow them to make informed decisions regarding societal issues related to biological science.

V. EVALUATION: Final grades will be based on evaluation of the students performance on three (3) 100 point lecture exams and a 150 point final examination consisting of about 50% comprehensive material and 50% new material, in accordance with the following grading scale:

90-100 = A 80-89 = B 70-79 = C 60-69 = D <60 = F

VI. REQUIREMENTS:

1. Students are expected to complete reading assignments prior to lectures over a topic and to come to class prepared to discuss topics to be covered in the lecture.

2. Library reading assignments may be used to supplement lecture materials.

3. Exam dates will be announced in class two weeks prior to the date of the exam is administered. The final exam will be in given in accordance with the exam schedule available in the Academic Dean's office.

4. Regular and punctual attendance is expected. Attendance will be recorded; the University Attendance Policy will be followed in this course

5. Classroom behavior. Hats and caps are to be removed prior to entering the classroom. No food or drink will be allowed in the classroom. No tobacco products will be allowed in the classroom. Although open discussion of topics will be promoted, side discussions will not be allowed.

6. Students missing an examination for a valid reason, such as confirmed illness or attendance at a college related function, will be allowed to take a make-up exam. Otherwise, there are no excused absences from exams. For each exam missed (up to a maximum of two) the value of the final will increase proportionately. For example, if one exam was missed, that exams point value would be added to the value of the final exam which would then be evaluated at 250 points. A student who arrives late for an exam will be allowed to take the exam others have not already finished.

7. The Kentucky Program of Studies was consulted in the preparation of this Syllabus. Students preparing for careers in professional education may be required to make observations in public school systems.
