Parents and Families of First-Generation Students

Tips for Parents and Families

  • Take an active role during LINC to both support your student and better understand university processes; remember that this is unfamiliar territory.
  • Know that your student may experience culture shock while adjusting to new found freedom and a demanding course load.
  • It is common for first-generation students to feel overwhelmed or even "behind" those students whose parents did attend college; emotional support has a significant influence on the academic success of first-generation students. Remind your student that you are proud of them.
  • Encouraging your student to participant in extra-curricular activities will soothe feelings of homesickness and help with their assimilation into the college culture. Joining a club or organization helps to build confidence, gives the student a sense of belonging, and welcomes the opportunity to make new friends.
