The aim of the Division of Social Science is to impart to the
student knowledge and skills to assist in solving the problems of our
times; awareness of the effects of social science on civilization and
its use to improve the quality of life; ability to make value judgments
for effective life in a changing world, and the recognition that we
live in an open-minded world which requires receptivity to new facts,
new ideas, and new ways of life.
The Division of Social
Science seeks to convey pride in the achievements of the United States,
appreciation of the contributions to other peoples and support for
international peace and cooperation; and compassion and sensitivity for
the needs, feelings, and aspirations of other human beings. The
Division also seeks to guide the student in the development of
democratic principles and application to daily life; and the use of the
creative arts to sensitize oneself to universal human experience and to
the uniqueness of the individual.
The Division offers courses of study leading to either the B.A. or B.S. degree in Criminal Justice,
History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology,
and a Social Science Area (with or without teacher certification); as
well as a MA in Social Science. The B.A. degree requires 12 hours of
foreign language. A two-year Associate of Science degree is offered in
select areas. To earn the B.S. degree with teaching rights, the student
must take the prescribed professional education courses specified in
their particular area of specialization. Any student who majors or
pursues an area in any discipline of the Division of Social Science
must take an exit exam in the subject area of their major.
