Stan McKinney is an associate professor of journalism at Campbellsville University. He is also lead professor for the department of mass communication.
Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member at Campbellsville University in 2000, McKinney was editor of the Central Kentucky
News-Journal in Campbellsville for a little more than 20 years. During the last 13 years of that time, he was an adjunct professor at Campbellsville University.

McKinney began his newspaper career while in graduate school at Murray State University. He has a bachelor's degree in journalism with a minor in chemistry and a master's in communications with journalism emphasis, both from Murray.
McKinney's first newspaper job was as a reporter, photographer and front office manager at the Sturgis News, a weekly newspaper in Sturgis, Ky. He became a staff writer at The Sentinel-News, a twice-weekly newspaper in Shelbyville, Ky., in 1976. He moved to Campbellsville in 1980 when he became editor of the Central Kentucky News-Journal.
The Central Kentucky News-Journal is also a twice-weekly newspaper and is owned by Landmark Community Newspapers, Inc. which also owns The Sentinel-News and various other newspapers, other publications, television stations and other media all across the country.
McKinney also serves as adviser to the Campus Times, the student publication at Campbellsville University. The monthly newspaper for the last seven years in a row has received first-place national awards in overall content from the Scholastic Press Association.
While working in the newspaper industry, McKinney received more than 100 awards for reporting, photography, design and advertising from the Kentucky Press Association. He also has received numerous awards from the Louisville Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Landmark Community Newspapers, Inc., the Kentucky News Photographers Association and other groups. In 1981, he was named Education Reporter of the Year by the Kentucky School Board Association.
In 1996, McKinney was named Adjunct Professor of the Year at Campbellsville University. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award for Tenured Professors in 2010.
McKinney is also a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography, specializing in digital imaging.
He is the author of three textbooks, "The World Ends at the County Line: A Guide to Writing Stories People Want and Need to Read," "Basic Desktop Publishing" and "Beginning Photojournalism." He has also published a book of flower photos, "Glory in the Flower."
McKinney is a member of the Board of Directors of the Kentucky Press Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Tri-County Car Club and other professional and civic organizations. In 1992, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Campbellsville/Taylor County Chamber of Commerce.
He is serving his fifth term as a member of Campbellsville City Council.
