Underwood to be featured at Pence-Chowning Art Gallery at Campbellsville University

David Underwood, professor of art at Carson-Newman University, will have his artwork featured at Campbellsville University’s Pence-Chowning Art Gallery from Sept. 16 through Oct. 4 at the gallery at 205 University Drive, Campbellsville, Ky.

The exhibit, “Open to Interpretation,” will feature some of Underwood’s original photographs, along with acrylic, plastic lettering and clear oil-based varnish on canvas.

According to Underwood’s website, he is an artist who specializes in making composite photographic constructions and other mixed media assemblages. His work involves a wide variety of subject matter from a wide variety of locations. Underwood also produces provocative mixed media artworks with ambiguous text.

There will be an opening reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sept. 16, followed by an artist’s gallery talk that will begin at 5 p.m.

Underwood’s work has been featured in over 90 exhibitions from 1990 to 2012 and has had 24 solo art exhibitions. His work is also on display in 14 permanent locations throughout the United States, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

Underwood earned his bachelor’s in photography in 1982 from Carson-Newman College, and he received a master’s in fine arts degree with an emphasis in studio art from Florida State University. Since 1990, Underwood has been employed as a professor of art and photography at Carson-Newman.

He serves as chairman in the art department at Carson-Newman and is a member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
