Eligibility requirements

Application form 



The application is designed to provide sufficient information to conduct applicant background checks such as state and national criminal history records, driver’s license checks, employment verification and reference checks. Any material omission or inaccurate information may be cause for disqualification.

Age

Applicant must be at least 19 years of age by the close of the application date and cannot be 35 years of age by application closing date.

Education

Applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent and must be eligible to obtain certification as an emergency medical technician (EMT) and paramedic in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Work history 


Applicant will be disqualified for any of the following:
•Applicant has been discharged or resigned to avoid discharge within the last three years for neglect of duties, violation of job safety standards, violations of rules or standards regarding conduct towards the public, or violation of rules and standards governing punctuality and dependability.
•Applicant has been discharged or resigned to avoid discharge within the last three years for inability to meet performance standards as a firefighter, EMT, paramedic or peace officer.
•Applicant work record, including: number and type of positions held, disciplinary actions and/or suspensions, and duration of employment, which when considered in light of the type of work he/she is seeking, clearly indicates they would be a poor employment risk.
•While employed as a firefighter, EMT or paramedic, applicant appropriated money, property, or evidence for personal use or purpose.
•Applicant has omitted from the application any relevant employment information.

Driving record

The applicant will be disqualified for both criminal and non-criminal traffic convictions, pled no contest, or had adjudication withheld under any of the following circumstances:
•One conviction within three years prior to the date of the application and continuing to the date of employment for any of the following: ◦Voluntary or involuntary manslaughter resulting from the operation of a motor vehicle.
◦Failing to stop and render aid, as required under any applicable state or federal law, in the event of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death or personal injury of another.
◦Driving a motor vehicle or boat, or being in actual physical control while having an unlawful blood alcohol level, or while under the influence of alcoholic beverages or any other illegal substances controlled under any state or federal law.
◦Reckless driving involving alcohol or any reduced plea agreement from driving under the influence.
◦Attempting to elude police or failure to comply with an officers signal to stop.
◦Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in any property damage.
◦Operators license suspended or driving a motor vehicle while operator’s license is suspended, restricted or revoked

•Moving and non-moving traffic violations within three years prior to the date of application and continuing to the date of employment: ◦Accumulation of four moving traffic violations and/or 12 points assessed against ones operators license, covered under any state or federal law, or any valid ordinance of any city, county or municipality.
◦Six non-moving violations covered under any state or federal law, or any valid ordinance of any city, county or municipality.
◦No more than a total of six combined moving/non-moving violations.
◦Administrative fines or fines for parking, tolls or insurance related issues will not be included; however, an applicant will not be allowed to start work if they have unpaid parking violations levied by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

Criminal conduct

Applicant will be disqualified for any of the following:
•Applicant has been convicted of, pleaded no contest to or had adjudication withheld for any felony charge.
•Applicant has been convicted of, pleaded no contest to or had adjudication withheld for a misdemeanor offense directly related to the position sought and it has not been four years since the expiration of the sentence.
•Applicant is currently on probation for any criminal conviction.
•Applicant admits to committing a felony or other job-related crime within five years of the date of the application and continuing to the date of employment.
•Applicant has any pending felony charges or pending misdemeanor charges that are directly related to the position sought.

Drug use

Applicant will be disqualified if they have been involved with drugs under any of the following conditions:
•Used or possessed, within the last 12 months, prior to application deadline and continuing to the date of employment, any controlled substance defined as a violation under KRS 218A Controlled Substances or any other applicable out-of-state or federal law(s). Use or possession of such controlled substances more than twelve months ago may or may not disqualify the applicant depending upon the totality of the circumstances.
•Been involved in the sale, cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, or trafficking of illegal drugs or substances or prescription drugs in the past 5 years.
•Use, possession or sale of any controlled substances after becoming an EMT, paramedic, firefighter or peace officer or while employed (paid or volunteer) as a one.
•Regular and consistent use of alcohol to the extent it may interfere with the job performance and/or dependability, within the last year from the date of application up to and including to the date of appointment.

False information

An applicant will be disqualified if they are shown to have knowingly omitted material information or presented false oral or written information, during their consideration for employment with the Lexington Fire Department.

Character

Applicant must demonstrate excellent moral character with respect to sobriety, honesty, maturity, loyalty, trustworthiness, reliability, discretion and associates.

Polygraph examination

Applicant must submit to a polygraph examination. The applicant will be disqualified if they refuse to take the examination or is suspected of deploying countermeasures in an attempt to defeat the testing process. Failure to complete the examination will result in removal from the hiring process.

Medical examination

The applicant must pass a medical examination as administered by the physician of choosing by the Lexington-Fayette County Government. In addition, the applicant must provide any/all information requested and/or submit to any additional exams as specified by the designated physician or their designee.

Psychological examination

Applicants must submit to a psychological examination and meet the qualification standards. Any applicant refusing to submit to this psychological examination will be automatically removed from the hiring process.

Military service and discharge

An applicant that has been discharged from any branch of the United States Military, Military Reserves or Coast Guard on a dishonorable discharge shall not be allowed to remain in the process. Any candidate who is discharged on less than honorable conditions may be removed from the process depending upon the circumstances surrounding the less than honorable discharge.

Candidate physical agility testing

All applicants must successfully pass the physical agility test required at the time for the given hiring process.
