Ed Johnson
Ed Johnson is currently the Assistant Marching and Concert Band Director at Campbellsville
University (CU) in Campbellsville, Kentucky. He also serves as Assistant Athletic
Band Director. Mr. Johnson is the Director of the Color Guard and designs the drill
for the CU Tiger Marching Band. New to his responsibilities this year is the CU Winterguard
Program which will have its inaugural year in January 2022 in the Southeastern Color
Guard Circuit (SCGC).
Mr. Johnson was band director in the Hart County Schools for 30 years before his retirement
in 2019. During his tenure, his concert bands received numerous consecutive Distinguished
Ratings at the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) District and State level
assessments as well as various concert assessments across the country. The Hart County
Marching Band, under Mr. Johnson’s direction was a two time state finalist and a 24
time Semi-Finalist at the KMEA State Marching Band Championships. Other accolades
for his band include being a two time Bands of America (BOA) Class A Regional Champion
and a BOA Grand National Championship Semi-Finalist. Mr. Johnson was also the Director
of the Hart County Winterguard which has received numerous awards in SCGC and Winter
Guard International (WGI). In 2015, Mr. Johnson created the WINDS program (the first
of its kind in the state of Kentucky) at Hart County which was very successful during
the five years he directed this group becoming a three time WGI World Finalist and
Class Champions in SCGC.
Ed Johnson received his Masters of Music Education from Western Kentucky University
(WKU) in Bowling Green, Kentucky and his Bachelors of Music Education from Eastern
Kentucky University (EKU) in Richmond, Kentucky. Mr. Johnson is a native of Laurel
County (London, Kentucky) and a 1982 graduate of Laurel County High School.
Mr. Johnson is a member of the following professional organizations: NAfME, KMEA,
KEA, Phi Beta Mu, and Delta Omicron. He was named the KMEA 4th District Band Directors
Association (FDBDA) High School Teacher of the Year as well as a recipient of the
Hart County High School Teacher of the Year and a recipient of the Hart County Chamber
of Commerce Teacher of the Year and inducted into the SCGC Hall of Fame in 2020.
