Agriculture Internships, Peterson Farms, Loretto KY

Peterson Farms in Loretto, KY is firing to fill 2 Agriculture Internship positions—Crop Scout and Field Operations internships.

CROP SCOUT INTERNSHIP

Role and Responsibilities:

Peterson Farms is a progressive, family operated row crop production farm based out of Loretto, KY. As a Crop Scout Intern at Peterson Farms your primary responsibility will be to assist the Chief Agronomist and the Agronomy team in the scouting and agronomic management of corn, soybeans, and wheat throughout the various stages of growth during the summer. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Stand counting and growth staging crops
  • Weed, insect, and disease identification
  • Soil and Tissue Sampling
  • Operational decision making based upon the collection of agronomic data
  • Other on-farm duties as assigned

Through an Internship with Peterson Farms you can expect to learn agronomic management practices and how they are implemented in a large row crop production operation.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Preferred candidates will be a junior or senior pursuing a degree or a recent graduate of: agronomy, plant and soil sciences, or related agricultural degree.

Preferred Skills:

Preferred candidates will have previous production agriculture experience whether it be through prior internships or on-farm experience. Good communication skills are a must. A minimum working knowledge of Microsoft Office would be useful, but not required. Most of all, candidates need to have a drive to Learn!

FIELD OPERATIONS INTERNSHIP

Role and Responsibilities:

Peterson Farms is a family operated row crop production farm based out of Loretto, KY. As a Field Operations Intern at Peterson Farms your primary responsibility will be to assist the Operations team in tasks related to land management and production practices primarily of corn, soybeans, wheat and maintaining the quality of a large scale row crop operation.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

–           Maintenance and repair of equipment and operating facilities

–           Field equipment operation including use of on-board computing systems in equipment such as tractors, sprayers, combines, etc.

–           Assisting in the movement/transport of necessary equipment from field to field

–           Various other on-farm duties as assigned

Through an Internship with Peterson Farms you can expect to use our core values to gain a better understanding of the logistics and skills necessary to maintain quality and efficiency in a large scale row-crop operation.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must be able to obtain a DOT medical card required for operation of equipment. Possession of a CDL is a plus. Preferred candidates would also be a junior or senior pursuing a degree in Agronomy or Plant and Soil Science, Agricultural Economics, Ag Business, or other related fields, but it is not required.

Preferred Skills:

Preferred candidates will have previous production agriculture experience whether it be through prior internships or on-farm experience. At minimum, candidates should have a basic knowledge of machinery operation. Good communication skills are a must. Most importantly, candidates need to have a drive to Learn!

INTERNSHIP PERIOD

Internships usually begin in April and continue until the completion of fall harvest (typically December 1st). Peterson Farms is open to the possibility of extending the internship to begin earlier in the spring.
