Reporting to the Senior Associate Athletic Director, the Manager of Wellness & Recreation will support the programming efforts of the Department by performing the following:

  • Establishes and implements short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures for Fitness and Wellness, monitors and evaluates operational effectiveness, and implements changes required for improvement.
  • Oversees the administrative and supervisory functions of the group fitness and personal training programs; provides data and maintains detailed records on program’s revenue, budget, demand, client feedback, instructor/trainer feedback, and participation numbers.
  • Establishes tracking procedures for facility use and program participation. Identifies patron goals and develops detailed fitness programs with tangible metrics for success.
  • Works with marketing and membership departments to develop targeting and promotional materials to boost participation and recruitment for group fitness, personal training, massage and nutrition programs.
  • Works with center staff, management, company affiliates and service providers in collaborative manner to grow and ensure delivery of quality programs and services.
  • Directly supervises, manages, and develops two graduate assistants, 25 fitness instructors and 10 certified personal trainers dedicated to evaluating and assessing program objectives and goals.

The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 4 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience coaching group fitness instructors and personal trainers.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural questions.
  • Experience with designing and scheduling fitness classes.
  • Familiarity with fitness equipment and proper exercise technique.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize workflow and coordinate activities.
  • Ability to research and resolve office management problems and questions.
  • Ability to update skills on a continual basis.
