Nurse Manager (FT), Home of the Innocents – Louisville, KY

Job purpose

The primary role of the Nurse Manager is to manage, oversee, and support Nursing Department team members in the Kosair Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center in collaboration with and at the direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing, the Vice President of Nursing, Nursing Department leadership, team members, physicians, and other department disciplines, providing guidance, support, and service to sustain and advance the highest quality of care of residents and the mission of the Home of the Innocents.  The Nurse Manager supports and promotes standards of excellence, professionalism, compassion, and safety that adhere to federal, state, local and facility standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Continually manage, oversee, support, and evaluate Nursing Department team members with compassion and professionalism providing leadership, support, service, and training, focusing on team member satisfaction, safety, and professional development to continually engage team members to provide the highest quality of resident care delivery, promptly responding to deficiencies and concerns as required and as needed.
  • Continually manage and oversee daily operations of assigned Neighborhood, setting goals and expectations, and overseeing the success of the Neighborhood team in collaboration with Nurse Manager peers, Leadership, and all other disciplines and departments to collectively meet the needs of residents; ensuring the highest quality of resident care and an environment that meets or exceeds federal, state, local, and facility standards.
  • Provide direct oversight and supervision of daily operations of the Nursing Department, acting as the House Manager on assigned shifts, providing support, guidance, and service to nursing team members to encourage and ensure care that allows all residents to attain or maintain his or her highest practicable physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being.
  • Continually ensure a sufficient number of competent nursing team members are present to provide and maintain resident care that is safe, person centered, and based on each residents’ individualized care and treatment plan, and is compliant with federal, state, local, and facilities standards and regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with physicians to maintain optimal wellness and quality of life for each resident based on evidenced and outcomes-based standards of practice ensuring excellence and adherence to well-established Nursing standards and practices of infection control, documentation, safety, and quality.
  • Work collaboratively with the Resident Information Management Specialist, physicians, and the Manger of Resident Care to ensure each residents’ care plan and physician’s orders, on assigned Neighborhood, are current, appropriate, and person-centered; evaluating each residents’ progress toward meeting Care Plans goals at least quarterly.
  • Participate in quality initiatives to prevent and respond to injuries, infections, and other unusual occurrences responding to complaints, concerns and reports of suspected abuse, neglect, mistreatment, or misappropriation in accordance with federal, state, local, and facilities standards and regulations.
  • Effectively function and perform the duties of each direct report role, as needed, in collaboration with Nursing Department leadership to collectively meet the daily needs of residents, team members, the department, and the facility.
  • Assist as needed to meet department financial objectives collaboratively with departmental leadership to meet fiscal targets.
  • Treat residents, families, team members, and visitors fairly, with respect, confidentiality, with regard to all aspects of individual diversity, and inclusion to ensure they are free from abuse, neglect, and maltreatment at all times, reporting concerns immediately.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Nursing is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of direct resident care in a hospital or long-term care facility as a registered nurse is required with supervisory/management experience preferred.
  • Unencumbered and current Commonwealth of Kentucky Registered Nurse license is required.
  • Current CPR / Basic Life Support for the healthcare provider certification is required.
  • Knowledge of long-term care standards, regulatory guidance and requirements that govern long term care facilities as well as nursing standards of practice and ability to impart that knowledge to others is required.
  • Must possess and be willing to use clinical, supervisory, and communication skills to achieve and maintain the highest practicable level of care delivery.
  • Must possess excellent organizational, communication, supervisory, and time management skills.
  • Must function independently, with flexibility, personal integrity, and compassion to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and in various states of crises.

Working conditions

  • Position requirements may be mentally and emotionally demanding and involve frequent interruptions, extended work hours beyond scheduled hours including weekends and holidays, and working with ill, disabled, or physically challenging residents and their families often in a state of crises. Exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious disease, air contaminants, and hazardous chemicals is possible.

Physical requirements

  • Requirements of this position may be physically demanding and include frequent movement throughout the day, response to facility-wide and resident specific emergency situations, including cardiorespiratory arrests, and evaluating skills of direct care staff in the care environment. Must be able to push, pull, move and / or lift a minimum of 35 lbs. up to 65 lbs. unassisted, from the floor using proper body mechanics.
