Public Affairs Communications Internship, KY Chamber, Frankfort, KY

This is a paid position ($10 per hour plus mileage for any associated travel, including travel to/from Frankfort). We do not have specific timeframes for these positions in mind but will instead structure the start and end dates around the students’ schedules and needs. In addition, we are open to partially remote positions; however, to get the full experience, we would like for the selected candidates to be able to take advantage of opportunities to meet with policymakers and business leaders in person when possible.

Job Title:          Public Affairs/Communications Intern

SUMMARY: The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is seeking an Intern for the Diversity in Public Affairs Internship program. As an intern in this program, you will work directly with a professional public affairs team to support the advocacy efforts of Kentucky’s largest and most effective business advocacy organization. The selected individual will have opportunities to participate in meetings with legislators, policymakers, and business leaders, learn how to track and read legislation, observe and summarize legislative meetings and floor proceedings, assist in writing stories for the Kentucky Chamber Bottom Line, assist with social media efforts, assist with grassroots advocacy and events coordination, and more.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Below are typical job duties of a PA intern, but duties can be structured around the interests and skill set of the successful applicant.

  • Attending meetings with legislators and policymakers alongside public affairs staff in Frankfort and at other various locations throughout the state
  • Attending legislative committee meetings and legislative floor proceedings and drafting summaries
  • Reading and tracking bills during the 2022 interim session in Frankfort
  • Assisting with coordinating Chamber public affairs events and conference calls
  • Assisting with Kentucky Chamber Bottom Line articles and social media posts
  • Drafting letters to lawmakers and policymakers
  • Engaging directly with Chamber members and business leaders to get feedback on public policy issues
  • Assisting with grassroots advocacy efforts

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Some college experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Google Sheets.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Individual must have a valid driver’s license.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Individual must have excellent written and verbal communications skills plus a demonstrated ability to distill large amounts of information and research into relevant summaries. Individual must have strong computer and typing skills, including the use of and functional knowledge of several different software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office or remote work setting at a sitting or standing desk. Some light lifting of boxes (up to 20 lbs.) of printed materials is occasionally needed.
