Description:

The Department for Aging and Independent Living operates the Division of Guardianship that makes all life decisions for individuals adjudicated dependent and appointed by the District Courts to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. The Field Services Branch operates to provide individualized decisions based on the best interest, most appropriate and least restrictive alternatives for those appointed to guardianship. The department works with a very diverse population, community resources, the court system, community partners, and family members of individuals appointed to guardianship and other Cabinet and department staff in a collaborative relationship.

The Department is looking for an individual with the passion to help others. To be successful as a Social Service Worker I in the Division of Guardianship, candidates should be professional, polite, and able to work with a diverse and population. The candidate must be able to deal with difficult situations in a calm, respectful manner. They should be responsive, willing to meet each challenge directly and able to ask for assistance or guidance when needed and have the drive to meet the needs of those we serve.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains client’s records by entering data in the Kentucky Guardianship Fiduciary Information System.
  • Writing case notes related to each client served.
  • Provides face-to-face visits to assess health, safety and welfare and living conditions of wards.
  • Assists with access to community resources.
  • Makes medical, personal and/or financial decisions in all aspects of the ward’s life according to the order of the court.
  • Prepares court reports by gathering needed information from providers and individuals working with the ward.
  • Provides assistance to team members with ensuring wards do not go over resources that will jeopardize benefits.
  • Completes referral packets for wards in need of residential placement.
  • Coordinates potential placements for wards for the most appropriate placement available.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to plan and establish priorities, differentiating between urgent, important and unimportant tasks
  • Excellent organizational skills including time management, scheduling, coordinating resources and meeting deadlines
  • Attention to detail being thorough and accurate in completing tasks
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, being able to set aside personal conflicts
  • Ability to work under pressure, being able to cope with a high volume of work and meeting deadlines
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in social work, sociology, psychology, marriage and family therapy or a related field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
 (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.)If appointed to the Cabinet for Families and Children or to the Department of Juvenile Justice, an employee in this classification must furnish to the appointing authority within one month of appointment documentation that he/she possesses a valid driver’s license and must maintain a valid driver’s license for the length of employment in this classification

Working Condition

Performs job duties in an office/facility or residential program setting and visits clients and/or families at their residence. Provides emergency services on 24-hour basis, including accepting referrals and completing investigations at any hour without prior warning. As a result of enforced intervention, the worker runs the risk of physical harm.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 9 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
