Job Description:
The Office of Supportive/Affordable Housing and Services (OSAHS) helps formerly homeless clients succeed in permanent housing by providing access to permanent housing with services. OSAHS works closely with other divisions of HRA and with other governmental and non-governmental service providers to create new programs and to integrate and refine existing services so the people it serves can achieve their maximum functional capacity.

Under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner Supportive/ Affordable Housing and Services with wide latitude for independent judgment and initiative, the Special Assistant maintains liaison with outside agencies and sensitive legal and programmatic entities for the purpose of providing assistance answering any inquiries for various issues and tracking of responses.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Independently manages special projects with community based organizations assigned
by the Deputy Commissioner.

• Effectively and efficiently handles a broad range and high volume of priorities, question,
and issues as they arise from both internal and external partners, and accurately determining
the appropriate follow-up actions. This may involve urgent and sensitive information and thoughtful
escalation to senior agency officials, when indicated.

• Represents the Deputy Commissioner in a professional manner at community forums,
internal/external meetings, as requested and indicated, and interprets and answers general
questions that may arise using own judgment.

• Manages highly-complex calendars and scheduling for the Deputy Commissioner and other program
leadership. In addition, arranges complex and detailed travel plans, itineraries and agendas, including
compiling related documents.

• Ensures the Deputy Com missioner is well-informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities,
following-up appropriately and as requested.

• Prioritizes conflicting needs; handles matters expeditiously and proactively, and follow-through on
projects to successful completion, often within narrowly prescribed deadlines.

• Completes a broad variety of high-level administrative tasks for the Deputy Commissioner and
program leadership.

• Composes and prepares correspondence that is often sensitive or confidential; maintains confidential
communications, documents and information.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.

Preferred Skills:
• Knowledge of city fiscal and/or procurement systems a plus.
• Excellent organization and communication skills required.
• Project Management skills, such as creating detailed work plans in programs such as
Microsoft Project and/or Excel.

Residency Requirement:
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
