Sports/News Reporter, Central Kentucky News Journal- Campbellsville, KY

This position is responsible for all sports coverage and some general assignment news and feature writing. The successful candidate will report directly to the General Manager-Editor of the newspaper. The position calls for a multi-talented sports reporter, writer and photographer and must be dedicated to excelling at local coverage, identifying and producing enterprise sports and news stories and coordinating and producing the weekly sports pages and special sections.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrate high ethical conduct and standards
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field desired, or two or more years of sports writing experience required
  • Good photography, writing, researching and interview skills required
  • Competency in AP style with a high level of grammar, spelling and punctuation skills required
  • Ability to use electronic page design applications including Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
  • Commitment to quality in all aspects, from sports and news coverage to design
  • Excellent organization and time management skills required
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision in a small staff structure
  • Ability to update and use the newspaper’s website in an effective news and information reporting manner
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends to cover events as assigned

Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Write crisp, accurate and compelling stories, headlines and photo cutlines
  • Write a mixture of game, feature and news stories
  • Develop relationships with area coaches and student-athletes to facilitate the flow of information to the newspaper
  • Shoot clear and interesting photos
  • Design and lay out weekly sports pages
  • Design and lay out other pages
  • Write copy and lay out the sports preview sections
  • Cover news stories on a weekly basis
  • Schedule is full-time, 40 hours per week
