CU to present faculty recital featuring ‘Sacred and Inspirational Songs’

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Dr. Wesley Roberts, professor of music at Campbellsville University, and Dr. David Hedrick, assistant professor of music at CU, will present a faculty recital of “Sacred and Inspirational Songs” Monday, Nov. 1, at 8 p.m. in the Gheens Recital Hall, located in the Gosser Fine Arts Center, 210 University Drive, Campbellsville.

The program consists of old favorites by historical composers, including two movements from Mendelssohn’s “Elijah,” Franck’s “Panis Angelicus,” and Fauré’s “The Palms,” and contemporary composers, including Malotte’s “The Lord’s Prayer,” John Jacob Niles’s “I Wonder as I Wander,” and Adams’s “The Holy City.”

Other selections will include “At the Cry of the First Bird” by David Guion and the revered “I’ll Walk with God” by Nicholas Brodszky. The program will close with two inspiration selections by Rodgers and Hammerstein, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Climb Ev-ry Mountain.”

Hedrick earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Campbellsville University, master’s in music education from Eastern Kentucky University and his doctorate in education from the University of Sarasota, Fla. He has spent over 40 years as a church musician.

In 2006 Hedrick retired from public schools after he completed 28 years as director of vocal music at Shelby County High School in Shelbyville, Ky. He has been associated with the outdoor musical drama, The Stephen Foster Story, for 38 years and serves as the musical director and musical arranger.

He is a member of the Kentucky Music Educators Association, Music Education National Convention and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Hedrick received the 2010 college/university teacher of the year from the fourth district music association.

Roberts has been a CU faculty member since 1982. He has presented concerts in Europe and in Asia, including premieres of works by the Dutch composers Hans Osieck, Johan van Kepen, and Kees Weggelaar, and the American composers Tom Johnson and James W. Moore.

 

He is the author of articles and reviews in British, Dutch, and American journals, and co-author with Maurice Hinson of The Piano in Chamber Ensemble, 2nd Edition, published in 2006. He is currently preparing a new edition of Dr. Hinson’s encyclopedic Guide to the Pianist’s Repertoire.

Roberts has served as a visiting professor at the French Piano Institute in Paris and at Shanghai Normal University, and has served as organist at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Louisville and First Baptist Church in Somerset for nearly a decade each.

He has organized concert tours across Kentucky for international artists from France, Holland, Denmark, England, and China, and has served additionally as president of three professional organizations, including the Kentucky Music Teachers Association, which granted him its 2005 Distinguished Service Award.
