CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Dr. Robert Doty, a retired Campbellsville University English professor, will be having a nature photo exhibit of birds from March 19 to March 30. It will be held in Campbellsville University’s Art Gallery, located at 205 University Drive, Campbellsville, Ky.

The exhibit will feature birds from Florida, Kentucky, Illinois and Ontario. Most of the images are made with a Nikon D 40 with three lenses — Nikkor AF-S 18-55, 55-200 and 70-300.

A reception in Doty’s honor will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 19 at the Gallery. Everyone is invited to attend the reception and exhibit which are free of charge.

The exhibit is open on Mondays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Doty holds five degrees: an associate of science from Henry Ford Community College in Mich., bachelor of arts from Georgetown College, bachelor of divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, master of arts in English literature and a doctorate in Victorian literature from the University of Kentucky.

Doty was first introduced to the wonders of photography by his high school principal and has maintained a fascination ever since. His first camera was a used Ricoh twin lens reflex. He has recorded 60,000 photographic images using slides, negatives and digital technology since then.

There are few human endeavors that call forth such a range of effort like photography does because it can be creative, technical, scientific, propagandistic, inspirational or aesthetic, Doty said. Design, form, color, physics, chemistry, art, history, nature and imagination are all elements to be explored with photography he said.

“Photographing birds presents distinctive challenges because sometimes they won’t stay still or tolerate humans in their space. Good photographs are the result of skill, patience, access and luck,” Doty said.

Birds and flight have always fascinated humans and this exhibition provides a few examples of their beauty and grace in motion, Doty said.
