Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation

The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award was established nearly 100 years ago to honor Algernon Sydney Sullivan, a lawyer, philanthropist, devoted family man, and a powerful orator known for his courage and service to others. Sullivan’s life touched people from all walks of life, from street beggars and Sunday School children to influential business and political leaders, earning him widespread respect and affection. Professionally, he was a founding partner of Sullivan & Cromwell, one of the nation’s leading law firms.

The award, presented annually by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, recognizes individuals whose nobility of character and dedication to service set them apart. The Foundation facilitates awards at 54 colleges and universities, primarily across the Appalachian region, honoring both students and adult community members who exemplify selfless service and integrity.

Unlike awards based on scholarship, athletic achievement, professional success, or public prominence, the Sullivan Award celebrates spiritual qualities applied to everyday life, emphasizing character and service above worldly recognition. Each year, one graduating senior and one adult community member receive the award, which includes a bronze medallion, a framed certificate describing the award, and a brief biography of Algernon Sydney Sullivan.
