Clinical Nutrition • Neurological Health • Lifestyle Medicine

This continuing education seminar explores the critical roles of neurotransmitters, mitochondrial function, and neuronal health in neurological function. Participants will examine how diet, micronutrients, gastrointestinal health, and lifestyle factors may influence neurological health and patient outcomes. The session will also review relevant anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract and consider evidence-informed nutritional and lifestyle interventions applicable to patients presenting with neurological conditions.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the roles of neurotransmitters, mitochondrial function, and neuronal health in normal neurological function.
  2. Discuss how diet, micronutrients, and lifestyle factors may influence neurological health.
  3. Review clinically relevant gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology and its relationship to nutritional health.
  4. Identify evidence-informed nutritional and lifestyle interventions that may support patients with neurological conditions

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review fundamental concepts related to the central nervous system's interpretation of pain.
  2. Compare allopathic and holistic approaches to pain management.

Neurological Examination • Rehabilitation • Neuroplasticity • Hands-On Learning

Neurological evaluation and rehabilitation can represent an important but sometimes underutilized component of chiropractic patient care. This advanced continuing education session begins with an overview of relevant neurological anatomy and the effects of commonly used treatment approaches on the nervous system. Participants will then move beyond traditional myotome, dermatome, and deep tendon reflex testing to explore additional neurological evaluation strategies.

The session progresses from evaluation to rehabilitation, examining techniques intended to positively influence neuroplasticity and patient function.

Hands-on Session: Participants will work in small groups to practice selected neurological evaluation and rehabilitation techniques, creating an interactive learning environment focused on clinical application.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review neurological anatomy relevant to common chiropractic presentations.
  2. Perform neurological assessment strategies extending beyond basic myotome, dermatome, and deep tendon reflex testing.
  3. Identify neurological findings that may influence clinical management.
  4. Discuss the role of neuroplasticity in neurological rehabilitation.
  5. Demonstrate selected neurological evaluation and rehabilitation techniques in a hands-on setting.

Neuroimaging • Neurological Localization • Red Flags • Clinical Reasoning

Neurological symptoms encountered in ambulatory chiropractic practice can represent conditions extending well beyond routine musculoskeletal complaints. This advanced continuing education session examines the underrecognized but critical role of neuroimaging in the evaluation of neurologically complex patients.

Beginning with a focused review of clinically relevant neuroanatomy, participants will revisit the upper cervical region, brainstem, spinal cord, cauda equina, peripheral nerves, and related structures necessary for neurological localization and imaging interpretation. The course then applies this anatomical framework to neurological presentations in which diagnostic imaging may significantly influence patient management.

Cases may include upper cervical and brainstem abnormalities, Chiari malformations, syringomyelia, post-concussive imaging challenges, cauda equina syndrome, peripheral nerve entrapments, and plexopathies.

Case-Based and Interactive: Clinical cases, guided image interpretation, interactive polling, and practical red-flag screening will be incorporated throughout the session.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review neuroanatomical structures relevant to neurological presentations encountered in ambulatory chiropractic practice.
  2. Anatomically localize selected neurological abnormalities based on history and examination findings.
  3. Correlate neurological findings with abnormalities identified on radiographic and advanced imaging studies.
  4. Identify circumstances in which advanced imaging may be appropriate.
  5. Recognize selected imaging features associated with Chiari malformation, syringomyelia, cauda equina pathology, post-concussive presentations, and peripheral nerve or plexus disorders.

Neuro In Sights is approved for 12 hours of continuing education credit in Kentucky, with a maximum of eight hours permitted per day.
