The mission of the Campbellsville University Theatre & Dance Department is to cultivate talented, compassionate, and skilled artists who are prepared to make meaningful contributions to the performing arts and their communities. Rooted in a faith-centered approach, the program emphasizes artistic excellence, personal growth, and professional readiness. Through a balance of academic study and hands-on experience, students develop the technical skills, creative vision, and ethical foundation needed to excel on stage, behind the scenes, and beyond. The department is dedicated to nurturing performers, educators, and creators who lead with integrity, passion, and a commitment to inspiring others through the power of theatre and dance.
The Campbellsville University Russ Mobley Theatre was named in honor of Russell (Russ)
G. Mobley on Jan. 25, 2011, with an unveiling on April 30 of that year.
Mobley served 34 years at CU as a professor of speech and theatre from 1971 until his retirement in 2005. He directed more than 100 theatre performances, his first being Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Starr Garrett took over as director of the Department of Theatre and Dance in 2005 and has served ever since.
A partnership with Town Hall Productions, an event planning company, was created in 2011 in order to bring community theatre to the local area. In addition to community-based productions, this work includes the development of a youth theatre training program, the Creative Spirit Theatre Academy.
Campbellsville Christian Church donated its seats to the theatre in January 2016, with a dedication being held on March 23, 2016.
Theatre encompasses a rich variety of styles and practices, from dramatic plays and musicals to experimental and immersive performances. The Dance Minor at Campbellsville University encourages students to express themselves through movement while developing technical skill and performance artistry. The Musical Theatre, B.F.A. program offers intensive training in acting, singing, and dance to prepare students for professional careers in the performing arts. Students work closely with experienced faculty to develop performance techniques, stage presence, and vocal mastery while gaining hands-on experience through university productions. With a Christ-centered foundation, the program emphasizes artistic excellence, storytelling, and purposeful creativity in every performance.

The Technical Theatre, B.A. or B.S. program provides hands-on experience in scenic design, lighting, sound, costuming, and stage management. Students learn the technical and creative aspects of theatre production, gaining practical knowledge through active participation in performances and backstage operations. This program prepares graduates for careers in theatre production, event management, film, and entertainment technology, combining artistic vision with technical expertise.

The Theatre Minor offers students from any major the opportunity to explore the world of performance, production, and dramatic literature.
