CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University will present its annual Holy Week celebration at the weekly chapel service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 20 in Ransdell Chapel, located at 401 N. Hoskins Ave., Campbellsville.
The event is free and open to the public.
“Holy Week is a celebration of the greatest story ever told,” said Dr. John Hurtgen, dean of the School of Theology at CU. “It's a celebration of the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Hurtgen will be the featured speaker at the service and he says the focus will be more on the cross and the death of Jesus.
“I want to focus on the cross and what it represents,” Hurtgen said. “I want everyone to have a chance to meditate and take it all in because it was on the cross that God showed the true depth of His love for us.”
Hurtgen says that to truly celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, we must first understand his death.
“I don't want to just skip straight to the resurrection,” Hurtgen said. “We must remember that God came down not just to live the life He lived and teach what He taught, but to give His life for us while we were still sinners.”
Hurtgen will be speaking primarily from the book of Romans, but readings of the scriptures will be taking place in several different languages.
“We have many different nationalities represented at CU and this is a story for everyone,” Hurtgen said. “We want to tell this story in different languages so that everyone can understand it and be affected by it.”
Hurtgen hopes that the service will give people even more reason to celebrate come Easter Sunday.
“My hope is that people will attend the service and be deeply affected by Christ's sacrifice for us,” Hurtgen said. “Then on Sunday, they can truly celebrate Christ's resurrection and have a greater understanding of God's love for us.”
