Campbellsville University to host Janet Bass Smith, pianist, in concert

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Dr. Janet Bass Smith, chair of the marketing committee of Orchestra Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky. will be giving a lecture and recital on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. in The Gheens Recital Hall of the Gosser Fine Arts Center at Campbellsville University.

She will also be a guest lecturer for a master's class in piano on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon in The Gheens Recital Hall, 210 University Drive, Campbellsville. Smith is a former adjunct instructor in piano of Campbellsville University.

The recital is free and open to the public.

Smith received her Bachelor's and Master's degree in Piano Performance from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C. She also received a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Piano Performance from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wy., where she graduated summa cum laude.

Smith holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Conservatory of Music in Kansas City, Mo. She has a master teacher certification from the Music Teacher's National Association and has done further schooling at Juilliard School of Music based in New York City, N.Y., and from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester.

Besides teaching at Campbellsville University, Smith has been a professor of music for three other universities while also helping to form the Orchestra Kentucky in Bowling Green. Smith has won several honors through her work in music as well as having had work published in music journals. For the past 17 years she has been a park ranger for Mammoth Cave National Park and runs a piano studio in Bowling Green.

Smith has performed a Mozart concerto with an orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia, and a concert inside Mammoth Cave with a cellist from Germany. She has performed all over the United States and Europe as a solo pianist and with her husband Charles, a flutist.

Smith has been married to Charles Smith for 53 years and they have been performing music together for 56 years.
