CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University will host Mercer University's Minister at Large Dr. Walter B. Shurden in a Baptist Heritage Series lecture at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 in the Banquet Hall in the Badgett Academic Support Center, 110 University Drive, Campbellsville, Ky.
This event is free and open to the public.
“We are very pleased to be hosting Dr. Walter Shurden for our 2011 Baptist Heritage Series lecture,” John Chowning, vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president, said.
“He is among the most highly respected Baptist theologians of this era of history and has made major contributions to Baptist life across the globe.
“Baptist leaders from across the state are invited to join us for Dr. Shurden's presentation.”
It is the mission of Campbellsville University through the Baptist Heritage Lecture Series to promote the study, discussion and research of Baptist historical events, theological distinctives, traditions and leaders who are unique and essential to understanding who Baptists are.
Shurden is the former executive director and founder of the Center for Baptist Studies at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. He also served as the Callaway Professor of Christianity in the Roberts Department of Christianity in the College of Liberal Arts.
Shurden has also taught at McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was professor of religion at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., and was professor of church history and dean of the School of Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
He has written or helped to edit 15 different books and published articles, through which he has won honors including The Religious Liberty Award from the Associated Baptist Press. Shurden is a member of the Southern Baptist Historical Society, Association of Baptist Professors of Religion and the Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Shurden resides with his wife, Dr. Kay Wilson Shurden, in Macon. Together they have three adult children and six grandchildren.
