CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University's School of Theology will host Dr. Simon J. Gathercole, a lecturer in New Testament Studies and fellow at the University of Cambridge in the Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge, England, as the keynote speaker for its fall Biblical and Theological Lecture Series Nov. 17-18.
Each lecture will be held in the Ransdell Chapel on the campus of Campbellsville University at 401 N. Hoskins Ave., Campbellsville, and each lecture will focus on atonement.
The first lecture will be Wednesday, Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. to noon; lecture two will be Thursday, Nov. 18 from 11 a.m. to noon; and the third lecture will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
In addition to these three lectures on atonement, Gathercole will be the featured speaker for the university's annual Thanksgiving chapel service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 in the Ransdell Chapel.
He will be signing his books from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Campbellsville University Barnes & Noble College Bookstore, in the Davenport Student Commons, 410 N. Hoskins Ave., Campbellsville.
The first book is titled: “Where is Boasting? Early Jewish Soteriology and Paul's Response in Romans 1-5” (Eerdmans, 2002). The second is titled “The Preexistent Son: Recovering the Christologies of Matthew, Mark, and Luke” (Eerdmans, 2006).

Gathercole earned a bachelor of arts and a master of arts from the University of Cambridge in the classics and a master of theology and Ph.D. in New Testament under the supervision of Professor James D.G. Dunn at Durham University.
Before accepting his post at Cambridge, Gathercole served as both lecturer and senior lecturer in New Testament at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He also served for short periods on the faculty of Tübingen University in Germany and at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.
Williams said Gathercole is a recognized expert in the areas of Pauline Theology, Christology in the New Testament and the extra canonical gospels, and his scholarly achievements and publications are many.
To name only a few, Williams said, he published a commentary on the Gospel of Judas with Oxford University Press (2007), a work on the preexistence of Jesus in the synoptic gospels with Eerdmans (2006) and an important monograph on Paul's Soteriology with Eerdmans (2002), and he is currently writing a commentary on the Gospel of Thomas.
In addition to his books, Gathercole has published numerous articles in some of the top tier journals in his field. He has published articles in the Expository Times (2007), the Harvard Theological Review (2006), the Journal of Theological Studies (2004) and the Journal for the Study of the New Testament (2002).
Gathercole also serves as the editor of the Journal for the Study of the New Testament, and he is a board member of Horizons of Biblical Theology, Law and Humanities, Henoch and the Library of New Testament Studies
