CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University will present the opera “The Elixir of Love” by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) Sunday, Nov. 22, at 3 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. in The Gheens Recital Hall in Gosser Fine Arts Center located at 210 University Drive in Campbellsville.
The performance is free and open to the public and will have open seating (first-come first-serve).
“The Elixir of Love,” an opera set in the old West during the 19th century, was composed and first performed in 1832 in Milan, Italy. The original librettist was Felice Romani, but this production is using an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.
The opera features the following characters: Alicia, a young and rich country girl, portrayed by Debora Morais of Brazil or Ahhyun Im of South Korea; Jimmy Reno, a poor farmer in love with Alicia, portrayed by Samuel Hong of South Korea; Sergeant Bill Corey, head of the soldiers in the calvary, portrayed by Tae Eun Moon of South Korea;
Dr. Dulcamara, a traveling salesman (medicine man) and quack doctor, portrayed by Jonathan McCoy of Ekron, Ky.; and Glorianna, a young single girl in the town and friend of Alicia, portrayed by Lindsey Kleyer of Simpsonville, Ky., or Aubrey Skutt of Columbia, Ky.
The CU Chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. Frieda Gebert will be the chorus for the production.
Dr. Mark Bradley is the stage and Musical director and is assisted by Melissa Askew.
