Campbellsville University professor's article published in Classical Singer

By Matthew Schmuck, student news writer

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Dr. Frieda Gebert, associate professor of theater at Campbellsville University, recently co-authored an article in the November issue of Classical Singer.

Gebert's article “Resuscitating the Recital: A Challenge to Teachers” can be found in a section of the magazine titled “The Teacher's Corner.”

Classical Singer
magazine started in 1988 as The New York Opera Newsletter, and has progressed to be the premier magazine for classical singers today.

The article focuses on solo vocal recitals of those who are not famous in the music world and how this art form has become virtually extinct. Then gears are shifted to the university scene, the place where recitals are still a requirement.

In the article, Gebert proposes ideas of how teachers and musicians can put the performance back into recitals.

Gebert said, in the article, “Perhaps we could take a lesson from the world of sports and allow more personal artistic expression in culminating recitals.”

Additionally, she said, “Why are vocal music students forced to work in a seemingly unchanging and increasingly anachronistic medium like the traditional solo recital? Rather than require voice students to prepare an academic, formulaic exercise… why don't we empower them to once again work in a living art form?”

Gebert and her husband, Mark, have four children.
