Position:  Full Time Children’s Librarian/All Ages Programming Coordinator

Job Description
The Children’s Librarian/All Ages Programming Coordinator will be responsible for supervising all aspects of children’s library services along with the creation, planning, publicity, and implementation of programming for library patrons of all ages.

  •   Essential Responsibilities
    Promote reading, literacy, and the library throughout the community
  • Oversees all aspects of all-age programming, exhibits, and special events including planning, publicizing, and implementation. Researches community interests and needs for programming
  • Direct and supervise the operations of the children’s library service and all-age programming; trains, works with, and evaluates volunteers. Coordinates with all library staff for information and promotion of programming.
  • Coordinates children’s service operations with other library services and functions, develops programs and services to meet specific needs of children using ideas derived from books, other libraries and through other professional means.
  • Provides reference service to children and teachers and provides reader’s advisory service. Evaluates materials and services and assists in the selection of children and youth materials for library acquisition.
  • Monitors the conditions and help maintain order of the Easy, Juvenile, and Young Adult sections and the security of all the children’s areas.
  • Develops, interprets, and assists in drafting children’s library service policy.
  • Collaborates/interacts with schools, daycares, preschools, and local agencies in providing programs and events, Represents the library on various community and children’s services committees and serves as the library liaison to many community agencies
  • Will be responsible for getting self to and from various sites on a weekly basis, as needed, including schools, daycares, meetings inside and outside county (reimbursement for travel included)
  • Seeks funding, including grants, that may be available for library use
  • Purchase materials, supplies, snacks, etc. needed for the programs, keeping budgetary limits in mind. Charge to library and turn in receipts for audit figures and/or reimbursement.
  • Maintain statistics – number of programs offered, attendance figures, etc. – needed for annual report and in-house data.
  • Create bulletin boards, window displays, and book displays to promote library programs and reading.
  • Register for, participate in, and promote state and nationwide reading programs
  • Visit classes and invite classes to the Library.
  • Participate in in-school and afterschool activities at all local schools (from daycares to college).
  • Participate in local events (including Apple Festival, Christmas programs, county fair, etc.)
  • Consult with director and designated staff to purchase books and items within budgetary limits.
  • Attend continuing education workshops and take advantage of online forums, etc. to learn and share ideas with other youth services and adult program librarians.
  • Maintain files of story hour and craft ideas, orderly and curated storage of craft supplies, prizes, etc.
  • Coordinates program planning with school librarians, teachers, and other community agencies to ensure complementary services to children and adults. Prepares reading lists for school and community distribution.
  • Prepares regular reports for the library board and director.
  • Maintains awareness of trends in youth services and of issues affecting youth. Attends other library meetings and participates in professional library organizations for children’s, adults, and outreach programming.
  • Performs other duties in the library, as assigned.

• Considerable knowledge of the needs and abilities of children and the available library materials and services

Tools and Equipment Used
• Personal computer, printer, software programs, calculator, telephone, copier, fax, audio-visual equipment, sound equipment.

License and Certification Requirements
• Must have a valid Kentucky State Driver’s License
• Will be required to take courses (paid for by library) for state certification.

  • Hand-eye coordination necessary to operate computers and various office equipment.
  • Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Tolerance of louder noise and voice levels needed – noise level in work areas, especially in the children’s areas during programs, can be particularly loud.

 

Experience and Training

Minimum of High School Degree or GED required. Prefer library and/or experience working with young children. Prefer previous supervisory experience and background in working extensively with children and the general public.
