Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dr. Sarah Smith’s journey in the field of nursing began with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Her dedication to nursing led her to pursue higher education, culminating in a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Nursing Administration from Andrews University. However, Dr. Smith’s passion for women’s health and maternal care drove her further. She obtained a post-master’s certificate as a Nurse-Midwife from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing. Continuing her educational pursuits, she earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Frontier Nursing University.

Dr. Smith’s career as a nurse educator began in earnest when she at Chattanooga State Community College in the ADN program in 1990. She has taught undergraduate and graduate nursing students throughout her career. She began teaching as an adjunct professor in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at Campbellsville University in January of 2021. Her experience and dedication quickly led to her appointment as the RN-to-BSN Program Coordinator in July 2022.

Before transitioning to academia, Dr. Smith practiced as a Certified Nurse-Midwife in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for over two decades. During her career, she assisted in bringing more than 2500 babies safely into the world and providing care for many women and families. Her commitment to women’s health, maternal and newborn health is evident in her long-standing practice. In recognition of her contributions to the field of Nurse-Midwifery, Dr. Smith was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Nurse-Midwives in 2020.

Dr. Smith is involved in American Nurses Association, Tennessee Nurses Association, American College of Nurse-Midwives, Sigma Theta Tau, and a variety of other organizations. She enjoys volunteering in her church and with Pregnancy Care Centers in Chattanooga and Nashville.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Smith finds solace and joy in various pursuits. She enjoys cooking, reading, and walking, but her greatest happiness comes from spending time with her family! Her current residence in Foley, Alabama, near the Gulf of Mexico, is her cherished “happy place.”

She is blessed and thankful for God’s calling and giving her a passion for nursing, nursing education, women’s health care, and serving Him in some of the most unlikely places!
