CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Kay Sutton, instructor in chemistry at Campbellsville University, has been promoted to assistant professor of chemistry, according to Dr. Michael V. Carter, president.
Sutton, who has been employed at CU since 1986, was the recipient of the 2006 Outstanding Academy Science Superlative Award for her record of service to the Kentucky Academy of Science.
Sutton has served on the board of directors of the Kentucky Academy of Science from 1999 to 2006 and, for the past six years, served as state director of the Kentucky Junior Academy of Science. Her work as the director of the Junior Academy involved planning, organizing and overseeing the spring symposium every year.
The 2006 KJAS spring symposium, which she planned, hosted 110 student presentations, the largest number on record.
Sutton received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Kentucky University in 1983 and 1985, respectively. She had taken additional graduate courses at Western Kentucky University.
She is a member of the American Chemical Society and has ACS accreditation. Sutton also belongs to the Division of Physical Chemistry.
She received the Campbellsville University Non-tenured Faculty Academic Excellence Award in 2001 and the Student Government Association Extra Mile Faculty Award in 1999.
Sutton has also worked with the Outdoor Classroom Institute at CU’s Clay Hill Memorial Forest. She has served as an adviser for numerous freshmen interested in the natural and applied sciences, as well as the pre-health care professions.
Sutton has organized “Day on Campus” visits for numerous young students from many schools throughout Kentucky since 1989. She has served on numerous committees and has been faculty adviser for Alpha Beta Chapter of Sigma Zeta.
Sutton has also served as a chemistry instructor and graduate assistant and lab instructor at EKU. She was named Outstanding Senior Chemist at Eastern.
She has attended numerous seminars and symposia.
Sutton is the daughter of William M. and Patricia U. Sutton of Springfield, Ky. She graduated from Washington County High School in 1979.
