CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University’s School of Education Pinning and Hooding Ceremony took place recently at Campbellsville Baptist Church as students who received their undergraduate degree received a pin and those receiving their masters degrees were presented with their hoods.
The pinning ceremony has been taking place since 2011 when students of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor education society, approached the School of Education dean and requested the consideration of a pinning ceremony for graduates and was later approved by the School of Education faculty and administration.
The pin the student receive is in the shape of a puzzle piece, which represents a piece of the School of Education Conceptual Framework that describes the education program. “The pin symbolizes that we empower our students to go into their own classroom to empower their students,” Dr. Beverly Ennis, dean of the School of Education, said.
Rebecca Camille Janzten of Brandenburg, Ky. spoke for her and her fellow graduates. “Every single person that I am looking at has over an obstacle if not multiple. Here we are today having overcome the obstacles.
“Some of us were living away from home for the first time, some of us non-traditional students, some of us having a job as well as being a student. We are family, we have empathized with each other and we have struggled together. No matter how much we felt like we were alone, we have never been alone.
“Today this acknowledgement shows that we can overcome the obstacles and can do anything we set our minds to. We are ready to be teachers, be educators and make a difference and impact in someone’s life, and ready to prove that we can persevere. My final words today are, have faith, be ready and keep overcoming obstacles.”
Members of Kappa Delta Pi were presented with cords by Dr. Lisa Fulks, assistant professor of education/special education, and Dr. Robin Magruder, assistant professor of education.
Dr. Marilyn Goodwin, assistant professor of early childhood education; Dr. Dottie Davis, assistant professor of education; Susan Blevins, assistant professor of education; Don Cheatham, instructor in education/computer information system, and Magruder presented the candidates with their pins. Ms. Norma Wheat, assistant professor of special education and chair of special education, presented those receiving their masters with their hoods.
