Greg Fountain, who led Campbellsville University and the nation in rushing last season, was named the Offensive MVP for the Nationals in the Third Annual College Franz/Victory Sports Network NAIA “Senior Classic” played April 25 in Plate City, Mo.
The 6-3, 231-pound Fountain led all rushers in the game with 67 yards with a workmanlike 23 carries. Fountain broke the game’s longest run of 20 yards in the second quarter, setting up his team’s second touchdown. But his work during the Nationals’ first scoring drive, when he ran for 5, 2 and 11 yards on three consecutive carries, helped set up his 2-yard TD scamper. He also caught a 9-yard pass.
His National team won the game 24-10.
The game provided an opportunity for 120 former NAIA football players, from 50 different NAIA programs, to play one more football game.
Fountain, who played high school football for Owensboro Apollo, averaged 156.9 rushing yards a game for The Fighting Tigers. He gained 1,726 yards his senior season and left his name in the CU record book with 4,419 yards during his four-year career. He scored 21 touchdowns his season campaign and scored 284 points in his career. Fountain was second in the nation in all-purpose yards (163.3 ypg), second in touchdowns (21), and second in scoring (11.5 ppg).
“Greg had a special blend of power and quickness,” said Tiger coach Perry Thomas. “He also had an excellent field of vision of the game unfolding in front of him.”
Thomas, who only coached Fountain for one season, thinks he was a D-1 player playing in the NAIA.
“He slipped through the cracks,” admitted Thomas. “He came here, worked hard and developed into what he is today.”
