By Scarlett Birge, student news writer, Office of University Communications

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Celebrating the determination to excel in musical achievement, Campbellsville University’s Honors Band is back again with the event’s concluding concert set for Saturday, Feb. 12 at 11:30 a.m. in Ransdell Chapel, 401 North Hoskins Ave., Campbellsville, Ky., with guest clinician Richard Saucedo, director of bands emeritus.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Participants in the Honors Band were selected from 20 different high school band programs across the state. With 185 students nominated, 90 students were selected to participate based on recommendation by their high school band directors. Rehearsals begin in Ransdell Chapel Thursday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m.

While Honors Band students are on CU’s campus they have the opportunity to hear from enrollment teams, take tours, audition for School of Music scholarships and receive instruction from music faculty in masterclasses.

Saucedo will be giving local band directors and music students a brief clinic session on rehearsal techniques. In addition to working with the Honors Band students, Saucedo will be rehearsing with CU’s Concert Band with his composition titled “Walking into History,” which will be presented in a separate concert on Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. in Ransdell Chapel.

Saucedo is a freelance arranger and composer having released over 300 musical arrangements and choral compositions. He is a member of the Conn-Selmer Division of Education and serves as assistant chief judge for the Bands of America (BOA) Marching Band competitions. He works on the writing staff for the Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation.

He is retired from the William H. Duke Center for the Performing Arts at Carmel High School (CHS) of Carmel, Ind. During his 31 years serving, CHS bands received several state and national honors for concert band, jazz band and marching band. Under his instruction, the CHS Wind Symphony performed at the BOA National Concert Band Festival in 1992, 1999 and 2004, and was named the Indiana State Champion Concert Band in 2013. The CHS Marching Band was named BOA National Champions in 2005 and 2012.

He was named Indiana Bandmasters Association “Bandmaster of the Year” from 1998 to 1999, as well as the Indiana Music Educators Association “Outstanding Music Educator” in 2012. Saucedo was inducted to the Music for All Hall of Fame in 2015.
