CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.—Campbellsville University will host a Kentucky Heartland Institute on Public Policy (KHIPP) forum titled, “Contemporary China—Its Growing Military and Economic Power,” Thursday, March 5, in the Banquet Hall of the Student Union Building at 5 p.m.
The forum is free and open to the public.
Featured speakers for this event will be Ambassador Carey Cavanaugh, director of the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce and professor of diplomacy and conflict resolution at the University of Kentucky; Dr. Robert M. Farley, assistant professor of international security at the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky; and Max Wise, assistant professor of political science at Campbellsville University serving as moderator.
“This forum covers one of the most challenging and important geopolitical, economic, and military issues of our era of history – the emergence of China as a major player in the world,” John Chowning, vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president, said. Chowning is the founder of KHIPP.
“China is the subject of much study and speculation among policy makers, and the course of the world’s economy and political stability are no doubt tremendously
impacted by the future direction of China.
“We are pleased to host Ambassador Cavanaugh and Dr. Farley for this timely review of China’s role in the world,” he said.
Cavanaugh has served in Washington, D.C. in the State Department, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill. He has also served in Berlin, Moscow, Tbilisi, Rome and Bern. Cavanaugh, under Presidents Clinton and Bush, helped advance peace efforts involving Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Tajikistan and Turkey.
Cavanaugh earned his bachelor of arts in Russian at the University of Florida, his master of arts in government and international affairs at the University of Notre Dame, with additional graduate work at Notre Dame and the U.S. Army Russian Institute in Germany. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
He has served as director of the Patterson School and professor diplomacy and conflict resolution since 2006. He returned to academic after a 22-year diplomatic career with the U.S. Department of State centered on conflict resolution, political-military affairs and humanitarian issues.
Farley started at the Patterson School in 2005 as a post-doctorate scholar. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Washington in 2004. His dissertation, “Transnational Determinants of Military Doctrine,” investigated the role that transnational networks of military officers play in the diffusion of military doctrine. In addition to a book manuscript, he is working on projects involving piracy and naval doctrine, nuclear power in second tier states, and the spread of “Mahanianism” across the international system in the first half of the twentieth century.
Farley specializes in military doctrine, transnational politics and national security.
KHIPP primarily focuses its attention on facilitating public policy study and issues debate, while encouraging the involvement of Christian leaders in the public and civic arenas. The institute’s mission is to engage Campbellsville University students, faculty and staff, and the general public, in a greater awareness and understanding of the myriad issues confronting our culture.
The Kentucky Heartland Institute on Public Policy is committed to preparing Christian civic and political leaders for the 21st century, Chowning said.
