CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville University’s undergraduate and graduate students will be presenting the opera “Die Fledermaus” which is translated to “The Revenge of the Bat” in English. Performances will start Saturday, Nov. 23 until Monday, Nov. 25.
The opera will be held in The Gheens Recital Hall located inside of Gosser Fine Arts Center which is located at 210 University Drive, Campbellsville.
Performance times for Saturday and Monday are at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s performance will be at 3 p.m.
Everyone is welcomed to attend free of charge and seating will be on a first come basis.
The plot of this opera is about two friends who attend a costume party as a bat and a butterfly. The friend dressed as a butterfly leaves the other friend on a park bench sleeping, forcing the friend in the bat costume to walk home Sunday morning still dressed in costume; leaving the bat friend to seek embarrassing revenge toward the butterfly at a grand party.
The music in the opera contains many of the world’s famous Strauss Waltzes sung to an English text that is translated by Ruth and Thomas Martin with adjustments by Dr. Mark Bradley, professor of music, who is the director of the show.
“This opera is one of the funniest operas ever composed and is a great first opera experience for audience participants,” Bradley said.
Undergraduate and graduate students participating in the performance include: EunKyung Bae (South Korea), Lidiane Macedo (Brazil), Jianjia Wang (China), Ping Zhou (China), Amelia Weber (Campbellsville, Ky.), Jericho McCoy (Campbellsville, Ky.), Ian McGuffin (Bardstown, Ky.), Jim Davis (Campbellsville, Ky.), Michael Clark (Louisville, Ky.), Fern Thomas (Madisonville, Ky.), Amelia Chase (Frankfort, Ky.), Alyssa Gnadinger (Munfordville, Ky.), Carri Hunt (Mt. Vernon, Ky.) , and others. The pianist for the production will be Carla Farias of Venezuela.
