CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – “You are now a part of the fabric at Campbellsville University,” said Dr. Keith Spears, vice president for communication and assistant to the president at Campbellsville University.
Spears delivered the opening remarks at the English as a Second Language (ESL) completion ceremony in The Gheens Recital Hall on Friday, July 28.
The students who completed the summer program gained more than a certificate for their achievements; they also gained a family within the ESL world and made connections with people that will last a life time, Spears said.
“You have become a thread, a piece of that fabric, which we call Campbellsville University,” he said.
Bobby Parrish, adjunct instructor in ESL, called the students to the stage as Andrea Giordano, executive director for ESL, TESL, MATESOL and instructor for ESL, TESL and MATESOL, and Tim Hooker, ESL programs director and instructor in ESL, presented them with their completion certificates.
ESL completion certificates were the first of four certificates to be awarded. Those recognized were as follows:
Paola Hernandez of Venezuela, Kosuke Hitomi of Japan and Yurui Yang of China.
The Beijing Information Management Schools (BIMS) certificates were given to the following students from China: Dayuan Chen, Nuohannan Chen, Yulong Chen, Zexuan Fan, Qiaochu Gia, Jianxiang Huang, Wenyi Jin, Zhenmin Li, Yuxi Lin, Bowen Song, Kun Wei, Yurui Yang, Ruiwen Yao, Sihan Zhou and Yingsha Zhu.An award was given to the chaperone who accompanied the BIMS students and stayed with them for the duration of the summer. The recipient of the BIMS summer chaperone certificate was Jinjing (Jean) Yang of China. Spears thanked Yang for her time spent on Campbellsville’s campus and presented her with a handbag from the university.
There was one student who received the exchange student certificate. Giordano and Hooker presented the certificate to Yusha Sun of China.
Dr. Kwang Suh, director of Asian studies and the Intensive English Learning Program, and Dr. Mego Haralu, director of international education and assistant professor of theology, spoke about the importance of the English language. “The English language is no longer just the English language. It is an international language,” Suh said. He encouraged the students to share the good things that happen in their life and to do what they can for those around them.
Suh and Haralu assisted Giordano and Hooker with the presentation of the Intensive English Learning Program (IELP) certificates. The recipients were all from South Korea and are as follows: Jinseo Baek, Hye Su Cho, Chaeyeon Kim, So Youn Min and Seonwoo You.
An award was given at the end of the ceremony by Hooker to the employee that served as the ESL Summer Program Activities Coordinator. The recipient of this award was Kassie Little.
Dr. Donna Hedgepath, provost and vice president for academic affairs, gave the closing remarks for the ceremony. Hedgepath thanked the students for allowing Campbellsville University to be a part of their lives and for bringing part of their world to the university.
