Campbellsville University to present ‘Magic Flute’ Nov. 17-19

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University’s Opera Workshop will present “The Magic Flute” Nov. 17-19 in The Gheens Recital Hall at 210 University Drive, Campbellsville, Ky.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 and Monday, Nov. 19 with a Sunday, Nov. 18 matinee at 3 p.m.
Everyone is invited to the free performances. Seating is first come-first serve.

“The Magic Flute,” by W.A. Mozart, is a 2-act opera performed in English.

“This is one of Mozart’s most popular operas,” Dr. Mark Bradley, professor of music, said. “It has the classic battle between darkness and light or goodness and evil.”

Bradley said the production has “great singing voices, comedy, serious dramatic action, some fantasy and a lot of beautiful music.”

Juliana Moura, instructor in voice, assists Bradley with the direction. Pianist for the production is Carla Farias from Recife, Brazil, and the flute is played by Dr. Lisa McArthur. Fern Thomas from Madisonville, Ky. is doing choreography for the production.

Characters include: Tamino (a prince) played by Jianjia Wang, Beijing, China; Pamino (a princess) played by Ping Zhou, Beijing, China; Papageno (the bird catcher) played by Ian McGuffin, Bardstown, Ky.; Queen of the night played by Heather Heim, Big Clifty, Ky.; Papagena (bird girl and woman) played by Fern Thomas, Madisonville, Ky.; and Amelia Weber, Campbellsville, Ky.;

Sarastro (the high priest) played by Blake Whitlock, Hodgenville, Ky.; Monostatos Sarastro’s servant played by Jim Davis, Paducah, Ky.; the 4 ladies & spirits played by Eunkyung Bae, Busan, South Korea; Amelia Chase, Frankfort, Ky.; Raena Hubbell of Hodgenville, Ky.; and Margareth Miguel, Sao Paulo, Brazil; and the 3 priests for Sarastro played by Jericho McCoy, Campbellsville, Ky.; Max Themer, Frankfort, Ky.; and Michael Clark, Louisville, Ky.
