Campbellsville University to present opera ‘Gianni Schicchi’ in English Nov. 19-21

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University’s Opera Workshop will present “Gianni Schicchi” (pronounced Johnny skee kee) Nov. 19-21 in The Gheens Recital Hall at 210 University Drive, Campbellsville, Ky.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 and Monday, Nov. 21 with a Sunday, Nov. 20 matinee at 3 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the free performances. Seating is first come-first serve.

“Gianni Schicchi,” by Giacomo Puccini, is an opera comedy sung in English.

“This is a great opera for those who have never seen an opera and also for those who love opera,” Dr. Mark Bradley, professor of music, said.

“The story revolves around greedy relatives who want to find a way to change their departed uncle’s will so they will get all of his money and possessions.”

Juliana Moura, instructor in voice, assists Bradley with the direction along with student assistant Margareth Miguel from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Pianist for the production is Carla Farias from Recife, Brazil.

Characters include: Buoso Donati, the deceased relative; Gianni Schicchi, played by Dr. Mark Bradley; Lauretta (his daughter) played by Lindsey Kleyer, Simpsonville, Ky.; Zita (the Matriarch), played byFern Thomas, Madisonville, Ky.; Rinuccio (Zita’s nephew), played by Jianjia Wang, Beijing, China;

Gherardo (Buoso’s nephew), played by Jericho McCoy, Campbellsville, Ky.; Nella (his wife), played by Amelia Herrin, Sonora, Ky.; Gherardino (their son), played by David Farias, Campbellsville, Ky.; Betto (Buoso’s brother), played by Allen Brooks, Bardstown, Ky.;

Simone (the Patriarch and Buoso’s brother), played by Hahae Jung, Pohang, South Korea; Marco (Simone’s son), played by James Davis, Paducah, Ky.; La Ciesca (Marco’s wife), played by Heather Heim, Big Clifty, Ky., and Eunkyung Bae, Busan, South Korea;

Master Spinelloccio ( the doctor), played by Mike Clark, Louisville, Ky.; Amantio di Nicolao (the lawyer), played by Joe Weber, Campbellsville, Ky.; Pinellino (local shoemaker), played by Ian McGuffin, Bardstown, Ky.; and Guccio ( a taylor), played by Johnathan McCain, Rose Hill, Va.
